Beauty is more than just fur deep!
At Bunny Lodge, we do more than just fun! We do some serious stuff, too. Like making our guests look beautifully clean as well as happy. Our trained furologists (professional dog groomers) are available to take special care of your dog's total grooming needs - from a quick wash right through to show-dog styling of various breeds.
The why’s and wherefor’s of dog grooming
The dog breeds of today are very different to their wolf ancestors. Not only are the size differences great, but also the coat types vary hugely. Many breeds now have longer, softer and fluffier coats than the wolves of before. While these coats are cute and cuddly, they require
much more maintenance.
Many breeds of dogs, and not just the little ones, require regular and frequent brushing. Without brushing, it doesn’t take long for little knots and snags to become patches of matting, which then become bigger areas of felted fur that are impossible to brush out.
Matted fur must
be removed, because as it tightens and grows, it pulls in more of the fur and then the skin. These areas restrict movement and become painful. It is common for them to trap odours, collect urine and faeces, harbour bacteria and hide fleas. A matted coat is a bad, bad thing and
can be prevented by regular brushing.
If your furry friend is a longer-haired breed (large or small), brushing the undercoat regularly will keep it from building up. A compacted undercoat can prevent dogs from properly regulating their body temperature, takes much longer to dry after swimming, and is a common cause of the
wet-dog odour. Brushing also prevents excessive shedding, so it's well worth the time.
Our furologists at Bunny Lodge have the appropriate equipment to brush and blow out the dead hair and any compacted undercoat during the groom. Talk to us about a de-shedding programme - your carpets,
furniture and vacuum-cleaner will love you for this!
Bunny Lodge dog grooming
A vist to the dog groomer every 6 or 7 weeks, can be just as important as you going to the hairdresser regularly. At Bunny Lodge, we have all the necessary equipment to complete full dog grooming – a wide range of dog-special shampoos and conditioners; tubs; a hoist; warm-water showers;
grooming tables; clippers for any length of hair; blasters or dryers and scissors.
Nail clipping is a grooming detail that makes many a pet-parent cringe. Unclipped nails often get snagged and can cause damage to clothing or furniture. Not many dogs will stay still during this procedure, and it is easy to clip too much off and cut through the quick. Our experienced dog
groomers can take care of nails in a jiffy.
Another job best done by us is easing the pressure that builds up in the anal glands. Dogs use these glands as part of their territory marking, but they often get a bit filled up with the oily stuff.
This leads to discomfort and even pain, and is a common cause of “scooting”.
Regular emptying can prevent the glands becoming impacted or infected, and emptying is easily done by one of our experts.
Professional dog grooming by a properly trained dog groomer does more than create a fluffy hair-do. At Bunny Lodge, every toe and every square inch of skin plus teeth, gums, anus and even inside their ears get a thorough inspection as the fur is washed, dried, brushed, clipped and shaped.

Knots, snags and mats
Please note that matted fur can become an animal welfare issue. While our furologists will try to comb out as many knots as possible, if the fur is too knotted or matted then it is much kinder to the dog to clip the fur. We can discuss this when you drop your dog off, plus any surcharge
to the price for the extra time this takes.
